Can Eating Disorders Affect Men?

An estimated 10 per cent of people diagnosed with eating disorders are men, although this figure may under-estimate the real number of men affected. This is because eating disorders in men can be particularly difficult to identify and diagnose. The men themselves often find it hard to acknowledge that they have what may be perceived as a 'female disorder'. Equally, sudden weight loss may be masked by physical causes, such as training for a sporting event and therefore at first appearing to be 'healthy' and based around exercise. There is often less of a preoccupation with losing weight, but more of a focus upon having a muscular physique and meeting training goals.

This information can be startling for some people. But, what is even more concerning is the fact that many doctors do not recognize the signs associated with eating disorders in the men that they are treating. What typically happens in these types of situations is that the doctor will automatically assume the man is dealing with an emotional condition such as depression and that is the cause of the changes in eating.

Clinicians agree that diagnosing anorexia and bulimia in men is more difficult than it is in women despite identical behaviours. Men are also much more likely to be diagnosed with depression associated with appetite disturbances.A large proportion of men suffering from eating disorders are athletes. There is a tendency among male-athletes to diet or avoid certain foods in order to achieve a target weight or body image. Other occupations which are prone to developing eating disorders are horse racing, modelling, dancing, distance running and driving.

Eating Disorders in men usually occur in the teen years but cases have been reported in boys as young 8 years old and older men in their 50's and 60's. Both men and women may suffer both medically and psychologically throughout their life and 9 percent of chronic cases lead to death. There are many reasons why men go untreated with this disease. Society has perpetuated the myth that eating disorders are a disease of affluent white women; nothing could be further from the truth. Often, a male ego just won't allow him to admit to having what is seen as a female disease. Doctors and others in the medical profession just don't associate the symptoms in men as they do with women.

There are some symptomatic differences between men and women. Whereas women tend to focus on calories and weight, men tend to obsess over muscle and body fat. Women tend to use laxatives more often than men to control weight. Men tend to over exercise to offset overeating more often than women. Women with eating disorders want to be slim as their goal. Men on the other hand may want to be slim or heavily muscled, depending upon the body image most appealing to them.

For example, anorexics may use the disease as a means to escape from their problems. They usually find it easier to become so engrossed with counting calories and choosing the "right foods" rather than to face their emotional problems. Bulimics, on the other hand, may resort to bingeing in order to release the negative energies that are welling up inside them. Purging, on the other hand, brings them the needed relief from guilt.

Men are not as pressured as their female counterparts to be thin. This is perhaps the main reason why there are more women who suffer from the disease as compared to men. To cope up with their problems, men would rather turn to work, alcohol and substance abuse. In our society, it is the more "macho" way to go.
